With 45,000 students and 1500 staff spread across 6 major sites it's no great surprise to find Swinburne University of Technology relies heavily on powerful network infrastructure to communicate and share resources between its departments and campuses. The university's 80 IT staff wrangle a fibre network with a nominal local bandwidth of 10GB at a central campus in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn, with subsidiary microwave links of 150MB to 5 remote sites.
To cater for growing security needs, they have networked 170 Axis security cameras. Grant Harrison, Swinburne's Security Manager, says the new IP surveillance system has 2 primary goals – security and safety and there's a heavy accent on response to reported crimes or incidents rather than vigorous monitoring of cameras. Instead security officers' key duties are foot patrols, responses, and building openings and closings. The CCTV system is employed for investigations, to assess situations and to ensure the safety of security officers, staff and students after hours.
